Aurora Australis
Published in Hardcover by Slawson Communications (January, 1989)
Average review score:

Interesting reading for fans of ShackletonAlthough it's currently out of print, we can hope that the recent flood of Shackleton-related titles will provoke a reprint of the facsimile edition of the "Aurora Australis," the book written and published by Shackleton's 1907-1909 Nimrod Expedition in Winter Quarters. Most of the men contributed written works including articles, poetry, and even some fantasy (by as strait-laced a scientist as the future Sir Douglas Mawson!), expedition artist George Marston produced illustrations, then Frank Wild and Ernest Joyce typeset and printed the pages, and when everything was finished Bernard Day crafted covers from empty cases and bound the books. It is estimated that something from 75-90 copies were made, making this one of the rarest of Antarctic collectibles. If you are fortunate enough to find a used facsimile copy, as I was, snap it up; if not, let's hope someone realizes its value as a reprint.

Aurora: A Tale of the Northern Lights
Published in Paperback by Alaska Northwest Books (February, 2001)
Average review score:

Aurora A Tale of the Northern LightsAurora A Tale of the Northern Lights is a beautifully written and stunningly illustrated original tale of the origin of the Aurora Borealis. The author, Mindy Dwyer has obviously been inspired by the beauty, grandeur, and mystery of her Alaskan environment. Elementary students of all ages will enjoy reading and listening to the descriptive narrative as they admire the colorful, unforgettable watercolor illustrations. Further, the story will inspire students to create their own legends and tales of natural occurrences. In the tale, Aurora, who lives where the sun never sets, longs to see the darkness she has heard about from her Grandmother. A caribou leads her on a long journey. As she is traveling, Aurora collects colors from the daylight sky to help her feel warm and safe. She finally reaches the place where the sun dips below the edge of the earth, and she views the mysterious darkness. Aurora flings the colors she has collected into the dark sky, and as they dance across the sky, she plays with them. The story weaves the spirit of adventure into an appealing tale of courage. Even though Aurora A Tale of the Northern Lights is a fanciful story, the book has a glossary of the very real scientific concepts introduced in the tale. As a teacher, I recommend the book to elementary students and to teachers who want to inspirie their students to read and write.

Aurora: The Dayspring, or Dawning of the Day in the Orient
Published in Paperback by Holmes Pub Group (March, 1992)
Average review score:

Infinitely simplistic view into the creation of heaven & helThe aurora is a book of spirit not of understanding. The simplicity of the author is so profoundly penatrating that unless you have walked the tight-rope your self, the book will completely alude you. I believe this book is a major cornerstone for the student on the way to enlightenment. Boehme's presentation has been called clustered at best, but if ready, the word unfolds from within, and you will walk away a changed person.

Depression and the Spiritual in Modern Art: Homage to Miró
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (24 September, 1996)
Average review score:

When science cross over the art...J. Miro is a great modern artist, whose painting express many feelings. This book presents us to the Miro s biography and pictures. Going trough Miro and othes modern paintings paintings the author discuss depression and its expression in art. There are many paintings that express feelings as sadness (example Dali self report), anxiety , helplesness and fear (The Scream). One thing very interesting about this book is that the author mixed clinical features about depression and compare to art tecniques like what colour was used and why. This subjects leads us to K. G. Jung s theory about mind and expression on feelings and desires, he proposed a colective self, what justify why many different painters (and sculpters, writters,...) propose, in different cultures, the same way to express feelings, in this case depressive feelings. Talking about depression and art expression in this moment, going to the next millenium, is very important; after all, depression is the century desease - the first cause of working disability according to World Health Organization (1996) and, art expression is the way men talk to human heart and share theirs feelings.

Foretaste of Glory
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Kentucky (August, 1986)
Average review score:

A sobering study of human response to the unexplained. The northern lights show up much farther South than usual, so far South in fact, that no one recognizes them as northern lights. With that brilliance in the night sky, it must be that the world is coming to an end. The panic and the reactions of the characters are every bit as intriguing as those of the passengers of the Titanic. I cannot believe that no one else has come forward to review this Kentucky classic by one of this century's greatest Agrarian writers.

The Night Rainbow
Published in Hardcover by Orchard Books (March, 2000)
Average review score:

The Night Rainbow"A Night Rainbow" is our own piece of the northern lights. Like a firely in a bottle, Barbara Juster Esbensen is able to capture in words the grandeur and mystery of this most magical phenomenon. With unparalleled mastery, the author seamlessly weaves science, legend and poetry into a rich landscape of words. In this book which will be enjoyed as much by adults as children, Barbara's reverence for native folklore and her enthusiasm for the natural world are keenly evident. Helen Davie's lovely pastel illustrations effectively convey both the majesty and flowing, ephemeral qualities of the aurora borealis. Together, words and pictures embrace the reader with open arms on all levels of being - physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual.

Stunning Houses

Average review score:

Truly StunningThis book features perfect photography, as you can tell from the cover. The living spaces featured in the book were picked carefully, and they are great examples of unique and amazing modern design. From California to Japan to Spain, the ideas in this book are refreshingly different from what you see while driving down your standard suburban fantasy of that "gated community" with its "model" homes (aka "cookie cutter").
